Welcome to the Caltech Hiking Society's website. Our goal is to get people from the Caltech/JPL community out onto the trails. Below are the most recent posts. Look at the calendar and upcoming hikes to see what has been planned. The mailing list is also used to send out information about hikes. Feel free to look around and contact us with any questions and/or comments.

Mt. Lowe via Echo Mountain

Arthur and Chase are leading a hike up to Mt. Lowe via Echo Mountain. The trails up to Inspiration Point will be the same as the previous hike there, with the addition of summitting Mt. Lowe. Note that if you were tired on the previous hike, you probably shouldn't be attempting this.

This is a strenuous hike but it should be a lot of fun. There is no water on the trail, and you should have lunch/snacks with you. The trail should be in good condition, with hopefully no snow this time.

Planning Meeting

Date/Time:
2009 Mar 19 - 8:00pm
Location:
Caltech Y Lounge

This will be our first planning meeting. We'll be discussing where we'll be hiking over the next few months and the summer, organizational details, and the MHF funding proposal that we'll be submitting next month. It shouldn't take more than 1-2 hours. It'll be taking place at the Caltech Y Lounge (they have whiteboards, unlike all the other meeting places I know of) which is on the East side of campus. It's the southern room (further away from San Pasqual). Everyone is welcome!

Day trip to Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park is 2 hours away from Pasadena and a completely foreign landscape. It might not have the beauty of Yosemite but it's just..."different". And spring is the perfect time to visit due to the temperatures plus the possibility to see wildflowers.

Photographs, Wiki, and User Registration

Many people have asked for photographs, and I've finally gotten things to work decently well. There's still some work to be done, but that's mostly user interface tweaks. If you register (more below), you can add photos too. I've also added a wiki that hopefully people will use to put together ideas and hiking resources. To post/edit content, you need to register. Otherwise, you can look at what's on there already.

Hollywood Sign

One's time in LA is never complete without a trip up to the Hollywood Sign. This is not the most scenic hike and it's not particularly easy, but it is unique and, besides the sign, we'll get nice views of all of LA from the top of Mt. Lee. Plus we'll stop at the Bat Caves where Batman (and many other movies) was filmed.
